Indoor Soccer Turf in Houston: What to Check Before You Build
Rain outside does not have to stop the next game.
But indoor soccer turf needs more than a roll of grass on a hard floor.
The floor, padding, seams, and space around the pitch all matter. Here is what to check before you turn a gym, garage, or warehouse into a place to play.
Indoor turf is built for hard floors
Most indoor spaces have a concrete floor. That changes how the turf goes down compared to a yard.
Outdoors, turf sits on a rock base. Indoors, it sits on the concrete, usually with a pad in between.
The pad does two jobs. It softens the surface for falls, and it gives the turf a better feel underfoot.
Without a pad, playing on turf over bare concrete feels hard on the knees and ankles.
For indoor play, a no-infill or low-infill turf is common. It's cleaner, easier to care for, and doesn't track bits of rubber through the building.
The blade is short and tough so the ball rolls true and the surface plays fast.
What about drainage indoors?
Indoors, you're not fighting rain, but you still want the floor to handle spills, sweat, and cleaning. A good install makes sure the surface is level and that water from mopping or a spill has somewhere to go.
On concrete, we check the floor drains and slope before we build.
If your indoor space ever takes on water, say a garage that floods, we plan for that too. The turf and pad are chosen to hold up and dry out.
Indoor soccer, futsal, and small-sided play
Indoor games are usually small-sided. That means fewer players on a smaller field, like 3v3, 4v4, or 5-a-side.
The ball moves fast and players touch it a lot, which is why indoor play is so good for building skill.
Futsal is a close cousin. It's a fast indoor game played on a hard, smooth surface.
True futsal uses a hard court, not turf. But many training spaces use a short, firm turf to get a similar fast feel while staying softer on the body.
If your goal is skill work and daily touches, a quality indoor turf is a great fit.
How much space do you need?
You can build indoor turf in almost any size. A full indoor 5-a-side pitch needs a large room or warehouse.
But a garage, spare room, or gym corner can still hold a solid training area.
Here are rough targets:
- Skill and drill area: even a garage-sized space works for touches, passing, and footwork.
- 3v3 / 4v4: a mid-sized room or open gym floor.
- 5-a-side: a large open space, like a warehouse bay.
If you're not sure your space is big enough, that's an easy thing to check with a measurement.
Planning an indoor turf space
A few steps make the project smooth:
- Measure the floor. Length, width, and ceiling height all matter.
- Check the surface. Most indoor jobs go over concrete. We confirm it's level and drains.
- Pick the turf and pad. Short, firm turf plus a shock pad for comfort.
- Add what you need. Goals, wall padding, or line markings for your game.
- Get a design. See the layout before we build.
Because we install turf over concrete and indoor floors, an indoor pitch is very doable. The key is matching the turf and pad to how you'll use the space.
Frequently asked questions
Can you put soccer turf on a concrete floor?
Yes. Indoor soccer turf is built for concrete. We add a shock pad between the floor and the turf so the surface feels softer and plays better.
Is indoor turf good for futsal?
True futsal uses a hard court. But a short, firm turf gives a similar fast feel while being softer on the body, which makes it great for training and skill work.
Do I need padding under indoor turf?
Yes, a shock pad is strongly recommended indoors. Turf over bare concrete feels hard. A pad softens falls and improves comfort.
How big does an indoor soccer space need to be?
Even a garage works for skill and drill practice. A 5-a-side pitch needs a large room or warehouse. A quick measurement tells you what fits.
Does indoor turf need much upkeep?
Not much. A no-infill or low-infill indoor turf is easy to care for. Brush it now and then and keep it clean.
