Choosing a Houston Turf Installer? Ask These 12 Questions

A lower turf quote is not always a better deal.

Compare the same yard size and work, then ask how each crew will build the base, handle water, and finish the seams.

The turf you see is only part of the job. Use these 12 questions before you sign, so you know what is included and who will do the work.

Twelve questions to ask every installer

  • What exactly is in the price per square foot? Ask whether removal of the old grass, haul-away, base preparation, drainage and infill are included or extra.
  • Which turf line is it? Get the product name and the manufacturer's spec sheet, not just "premium turf."
  • What does the written warranty cover? Ask for the manufacturer's warranty on the turf and the installer's terms on the work. Most turf warranties are prorated and exclude matting and wear.
  • Who will be on site? Ask whether there is a lead on the job every day and who you call with a question.
  • How will my yard drain? The turf drains quickly, but the base decides whether the yard does. Point out where water sits today.
  • How are seams and edges finished? Ask to see close-up photos of finished seams and edges along concrete and beds.
  • What are the deposit terms? Ask how much it is, whether it is refundable, and whether it comes off the final price.
  • When can you start, and how will you keep me posted?
  • For dogs: which infill is in the quote, and how should the area be cleaned?
  • For play areas: the Consumer Product Safety Commission says buyers should request ASTM F1292 test data for surfacing under play equipment. Ask for it.
  • For PFAS: if this matters to you, ask for PFAS-specific documentation for the exact turf line, not a general "eco" or "safe" label.
  • Can I see finished jobs? Ask for photos or video of real installs, ideally in a yard like yours.

How to compare quotes

  • Put every quote on the same square footage.
  • Line up what is included. A lower price per square foot that leaves out removal or base work is not lower.
  • Read the warranty, not the headline number of years.
  • Be careful with a price that is given without anyone looking at the yard.

Common questions

What should I ask an artificial turf installer?

Ask what the per-square-foot price includes, which turf line it is, what the written warranty covers, who will be on site, how the yard will drain, and what the deposit terms are.

Why do turf quotes vary so much?

Mostly because of scope. One quote may include removal, base preparation, drainage and infill, and another may not.

Compare the same square footage and the same list of included work.

Should an installer look at my yard before quoting?

Yes. Ground conditions, access and drainage affect the scope, so a firm price should follow a site visit.

Is the cheapest turf quote the best deal?

Not if it leaves out base preparation or drainage. Those are what keep the turf flat and the yard dry over time.
