Mini Soccer Fields: What Size Fits Your Space?
A mini soccer field lets you play small games in a smaller space.
The right size depends on the players, the room around the field, and how you will use it.
You do not need a full-size pitch to get more time on the ball. Start with the space you have, then plan the turf, base, and drainage together.
Common mini soccer field sizes
There's no single "correct" size. The right size depends on how many players you want and how much room you have.
A good rule is to keep the field about 1.5 times longer than it is wide.
Here are common starting points by player count:
- 3v3: about 15 by 10 meters (roughly 50 by 33 feet). Great for young kids and tight yards.
- 4v4: about 22 by 16 meters (roughly 72 by 52 feet).
- 5v5 (5-a-side): about 36 by 27 meters (roughly 118 by 88 feet).
- 6v6: about 46 by 36 meters (roughly 150 by 118 feet).
Goals usually sit in the middle of the short ends, about 2 to 3 meters wide. Try to leave at least a meter of clear space around the edges so players don't run into fences or walls.
If your space is smaller than these numbers, that's fine. A mini field can be scaled down.
The sizes above are a guide, not a rule.
The right turf for a mini field
Soccer turf is not the same as lawn turf. For play, you want a blade that's built to take a beating and give the ball a smooth roll.
Here's what to look for:
- Pile height: around 30 to 50 millimeters (a little over 1 to 2 inches). Shorter blades play faster and feel more like a real pitch.
- Strong backing: the turf needs a tough backing so seams stay tight under cleats and slides.
- Infill or no infill: outdoor play fields often use a sand or rubber infill that helps the ball roll true and supports the blades. Home and indoor fields can use a no-infill turf that's easier to keep clean.
For most backyard and school mini fields, a quality sport turf with the right infill gives the best mix of feel, safety, and life span.
Base and drainage: the part that lasts
The base under the turf decides how long your field lasts and how well it drains. Skipping base work is the number one way a cheap field goes bad.
For an outdoor mini field on soil, the base is usually crushed rock. We dig down several inches, lay the rock, and compact it in layers.
Then we grade it with a slight slope so water drains off. In Houston, drainage is everything.
Our clay soil and heavy rain mean a flat, poorly drained field will puddle and stay wet.
For a field on a rooftop, patio, or indoor floor, the base is often concrete. We check that the surface drains and is level, then build up from there.
We install turf over concrete, patios, and rooftops too, so a hard surface is not a dealbreaker.
A shock pad under the turf is a smart add for a mini field. It makes falls softer and gives the surface a nicer feel.
Pads around 8 to 10 millimeters work well for home and indoor fields.
Where mini fields work best
Mini fields fit more places than people think:
- Backyards: daily practice without leaving home.
- Schools and daycares: safe, clean play that drains fast after rain.
- Clubs and academies: small-sided training to build touch and speed.
- Indoor centers: year-round play, rain or shine.
- Rooftops and patios: unused space turned into a pitch.
Because the field is small, it opens up spots a full pitch could never use.
How to plan your mini field
Here's a simple way to start:
- Count your players. 3v3 and 4v4 need less room than 5-a-side.
- Measure your space. Write down the length and width. Note any slope.
- Pick a surface. Soil, concrete, rooftop, or indoor floor all work with the right base.
- Choose extras. Goals, nets, fencing, lights, and a shock pad.
- Get a design. A pro can show you the best field for your space before you build.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a mini soccer field?
It depends on player count. A 3v3 field is about 15 by 10 meters, while a 5-a-side field is about 36 by 27 meters. Keep the length about 1.5 times the width, and scale down for a tight space.
What turf is best for a mini soccer pitch?
A sport turf with a 30 to 50 millimeter pile height and a strong backing. Outdoor play fields often add a sand or rubber infill for a true ball roll.
Can a mini field go indoors or on a rooftop?
Yes. On a hard surface like concrete or a rooftop, the turf is built over a level, well-drained base. We install turf over concrete, patios, and rooftops.
How long does a mini soccer field last?
With normal care, a mini field often lasts around 8 to 12 years. Brushing the turf and keeping it clean helps it last.
Do I need a shock pad?
It's optional but smart. A shock pad makes falls softer and gives a better feel underfoot, especially for younger players.
